Fiestas Patronales de Salcoatitan in Salcoatitan
Salcoatitan, a small Ruta de las Flores town in Sonsonate department whose name derives from Nahuat words for serpents and quetzals, holds its main fiestas patronales on the second Sunday of November in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, with a second, smaller August 29th celebration for Saint George. Both festivals draw on a town history that traces to a Franciscan missionary visit in 1586.
Long before it became a stop on El Salvador's Ruta de las Flores tourist route, Salcoatitan was known by a different, older name: Quetzalquatitlan, a Nahuat term generally translated as Place of Serpents and Quetzals, or in some renderings Place of the Feathered Serpent.
