Asmara Film Festival in Asmara
Eritrea's inaugural national film festival, launched in March 2026 under the Commission of Sports and Culture, screening around fifty selected films across four of Asmara's historic Italian-era cinemas. The nine-day program pairs screenings with talks on the future of Eritrean filmmaking and national production capacity.
Asmara Film Festival launched its inaugural edition in March 2026, organized under Eritrea's Commission of Sports and Culture with the stated theme of a renaissance of film in the country, and screened its selection across four of Asmara's historic cinemas, Roma, Impero, Asmara, and Hamasien, each a surviving example of the Italian-built movie theaters that once made the city one of the busiest cinema markets in East Africa.
