Faroe Pride in Tórshavn
Faroe Pride, held each July 27 in Torshavn the day before the Olavsoka national holiday, has grown from a contested 2005 first march, which required police intervention after an attempted assault on participating performers, into an event now drawing an estimated tenth of the entire Faroese population. Same-sex marriage became legal in the Faroe Islands in 2017; expect a family-friendly public march and gathering reflecting that fast-moving shift in social attitudes.
Faroe Pride traces back to a genuinely contested beginning: the first gay pride march in the islands, held in 2005, provoked open controversy, and members of a Norwegian drag performance troupe invited to participate had to flee an attempted physical assault from a group of young men opposed to the event.
