Fiji 1838, Face to Face pairs rediscovered drawings by French expedition artist Ernest Goupil, made during Dumont d'Urville's 1838 Astrolabe voyage, with Fijian artworks borrowed from institutions including the Musee du Quai Branly. First shown at France's Musee des Beaux-Arts de Chartres, the exhibition travels to Suva's Fiji Museum with French Embassy support, offering a genuinely two-sided visual record of a pivotal pre-colonial encounter.

Nearly two hundred years after French naval officer Jules Dumont d'Urville anchored the Astrolabe and Zelee off Fiji in October 1838, an artist who traveled with him, Ernest Goupil, left behind drawings of the archipelago that remained largely unseen by the public until they resurfaced for this exhibition, first staged at the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Chartres before a version traveled to the Fiji Museum in Suva with support from the French Embassy.
