Helsinki International Film Festival Love and Anarchy in Helsinki

Helsinki International Film Festival, nicknamed Love and Anarchy after Lina Wertmuller's 1973 film, has run every September since 1988 as a non-competitive showcase of international arthouse and festival-circuit cinema. Now Finland's largest film festival, it spans multiple Helsinki cinemas over about two weeks, recording tens of thousands of admissions in recent editions.

Helsinki International Film Festival, widely known by its Finnish nickname Rakkautta ja Anarkiaa, or Love and Anarchy, took its name from Lina Wertmuller's 1973 film and held its first edition in 1988 with a program built around five of the Italian director's own films, at a time when organizers have described Finland as a culturally more closed-off country still working to bring a wider range of world cinema to local audiences.
