Helsinki Pride grew from small 1980s protests marking the anniversary of Finland's SETA organization into a major annual parade, run since 1990 by the Helsinki Pride Community and drawing well over a hundred thousand participants in recent editions. The parade runs from Senate Square through central Helsinki landmarks to a park celebration, anchoring a wider week of talks and cultural events.

Helsinki Pride traces its roots to Liberation Day, first marked in the early 1980s around the anniversary of SETA, the Finnish LGBTI rights organization founded in 1974, when a handful of protests were held on the steps of Finland's Parliament rather than the large-scale public parade the event has since become.
