The story

Helsinki Samba Carnaval in Helsinki

Helsinki Samba Carnaval, founded in 1991 by Finland's Samba Schools Association and based in Helsinki since 1993, is the country's largest carnival, with a two-kilometer parade from Senate Square through the city center each June. Free and open to all ages, the event draws up to forty thousand spectators to watch samba schools perform in Brazilian-style costume and percussion.

Finland's Samba Schools Association founded what became Helsinki Samba Carnaval in 1991, staging the country's first major samba-inspired event in Turku with a modest parade of only a few dozen participants from newly formed samba groups, before relocating the carnival to Helsinki in 1993, where it has remained the country's largest carnival event ever since.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Helsinki Samba Carnaval's contrast is its defining feature: a specifically Brazilian carnival tradition, colorful costumes, percussion sections, and samba school choreography, staged against a distinctly Nordic June backdrop of long daylight and cool northern European streets rather than a tropical setting

02

The mystery stays covered

The parade's fixed roughly two-kilometer route through Senate Square and the city center, combined with free admission and programming for every age group from infants to seniors, gives the event an inclusive, all-ages character alongside its performance spectacle
