Seinajoki Tango Festival in Seinäjoki
Tangomarkkinat, first held in 1985 in Seinajoki after a chance sauna conversation and a mayor's enthusiasm on a train ride, is billed as the world's oldest continuously running tango festival. Its singing competition crowns a Tango King and Queen each July, a title that draws heavy media attention and has launched several recording careers, with the festival now attracting more than one hundred thousand visitors.
Tangomarkkinat traces its unlikely origin to a sauna conversation among friends: Lasse Lintala, then director of the Ilmajoki Music Festival, his wife, television executive Tauno Aijala of the MTV3 channel, and Aijala's wife Katja were relaxing together when Aijala suggested weaving tango specifically into Lintala's existing festival plans.
