The story

Tampere Film Festival in Tampere

Tampere Film Festival, founded in 1968 and running in its current international format since 1970, is the oldest short film festival in Northern Europe. Held each March at the Finnkino Plevna cinema, it screens around five hundred short films over five days, ranking alongside Oberhausen and Clermont-Ferrand as one of Europe's most significant short film events.

Local film club activists led by Raimo Rake Silius established what began as the Tampere Short Film Days in 1968, and the first Tampere International Short Film Festival under its now-familiar international format ran from 19 to 22 February 1970 under founding festival director Ilkka Kalliomaki, making the event the oldest short film festival in Northern Europe by a considerable margin.
