Batumoba in Batumi
Batumoba marks Batumi's 1888 city-status charter every spring with a citywide program of concerts, sports contests and street performance culminating in fireworks over the Black Sea waterfront. Its centerpiece is Gandagana, a two-day showcase built around the fast Adjarian folk dance of the same name, paired with a public academic conference on the city's history. The result functions as Adjara's own answer to a national holiday.
Batumi's city day takes its date, April 28, from 1888, the year Russian imperial administrators granted the Black Sea port formal city status after ninety residents petitioned for the change a few years earlier.
