The story

Bad Hersfeld Festival in Bad Hersfeld

Bad Hersfeld's festival stages theatre and musicals inside the Stiftsruine, the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world, open to the sky since a fire in 1761. Traceable through nineteenth-century public use of the ruin and the 1902 founding of the Festspielverein, the modern festival has run continuously since 1951, with a 1968 mobile roof by architect Frei Otto, later famous for the Munich Olympic Stadium, keeping audiences dry inside the ancient walls.

The Stiftsruine in Bad Hersfeld, the ruined remains of a great church originally built between 831 and 850, has stood open to the sky since 1761, when a retreating French army destroyed its roof, leaving what is today recognised as the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Staging modern theatre and musicals inside the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world, on a 1,400-square-metre stage set within walls dating to the ninth century, is a uniquely specific venue among European theatre festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

The 1968 mobile roof engineered by architect Frei Otto, who later designed the celebrated tensile roof of the Munich Olympic Stadium, ties the festival's infrastructure directly to a documented figure in twentieth-century architecture

03

The city starts moving

A traceable institutional history running from nineteenth-century public gatherings in the ruin through the 1902 founding of the Festspielverein to continuous operation since 1951 gives the festival more than a century of documented civic use of the same site
