The story

Berlin Pride in Berlin

Berlin's Christopher Street Day traces back to a march of 450 people on 30 June 1979, making it one of continental Europe's earliest Pride events. It has grown into a mass parade moving from Mitte through Schoneberg to a finale in front of the Brandenburg Gate, with trucks representing clubs, community groups and organisations and crowds numbering in the hundreds of thousands lining the route.

Four hundred and fifty demonstrators marched under the slogan 'Gay Pride' through West Berlin on 30 June 1979, in what became the city's first Christopher Street Day, held in memory of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York's Christopher Street.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Berlin's CSD is distinguished by its early founding date among European Pride marches and by the scale it has reached since: crowds finishing at the Brandenburg Gate have been estimated at several hundred thousand in peak years

02

The mystery stays covered

The route's finish at Strasse des 17

03

The city starts moving

Juni directly in front of the Gate — rather than a park or side square — gives the event one of the more recognisable finish-line backdrops of any Pride parade in Europe, with a stage programme of speeches and performances running into the evening
