The story

Bremen Freimarkt in Bremen

The Bremen Freimarkt traces its right to trade back to a charter granted by Emperor Conrad II in 1035, making it one of Germany's oldest fairs. Today it runs for seventeen days in late October on the Burgerweide fairground, with more than four million visitors drawn by funfair rides, a decorated-float parade and food stalls, opened each year to the Low German cry 'Ischa Freimaak'.

Emperor Conrad II granted Bremen the right to hold a free market on 16 October 1035, a charter that still gives the Freimarkt its claim to being one of the oldest fairs in Germany.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Very few European funfairs can point to an unbroken civic charter nearly a thousand years old, which is what separates the Freimarkt from festivals invented in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries

02

The mystery stays covered

The opening cry 'Ischa Freimaak' — Low German dialect rather than standard German — is a specific, locally rooted piece of language tied to this one fair

03

The city starts moving

The central parade of decorated floats through Bremen's streets is a defining set-piece that turns a funfair into a city-wide procession rather than a fenced fairground event
