Cologne Carnival in Cologne

Cologne Carnival has documented references dating to 1341, but its modern organised form traces to 1823, when the first formally organised parade was staged as a protest against Prussian occupation and the Festkomitee Kolner Karneval was founded to run it. Weiberfastnacht, the Women's Carnival opening the main street festivities, began in 1824 in Beuel as a labour protest by washerwomen, and the festival now climaxes each year in the Rosenmontag parade, drawing more than 1.5 million revellers as Germany's largest street parade.

Cologne's Carnival traces documented references back to 1341, though the organised, structured form familiar today is considerably younger, having developed over roughly the past two hundred years rather than continuing unbroken from the medieval period.
