The story

Cologne Pride in Cologne

Cologne held its first Christopher Street Day march in 1981, and the ColognePride organisation, formed in 1991, has since built it into Germany's second-largest Pride after Berlin's, with crowds cited as high as 1.5 million. The fixed parade route runs from Deutzer Brucke through the city centre's main shopping streets, finishing near Cologne Cathedral.

Cologne held its first Christopher Street Day march in 1981, two years after the earliest German CSD events took place in Bremen, Hamburg and Frankfurt, building on a city with a documented LGBTQ history reaching back to the 1920s, when Cologne was home to one of Germany's first gay bars.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

A finish directly beneath Cologne Cathedral's twin spires, one of Germany's most recognisable landmarks, gives the parade a specific, visually striking finale comparable to the finish-line landmarks of only a handful of other major European Pride events

02

The mystery stays covered

Cologne's own LGBTQ history, reaching back to the 1920s when the city hosted one of Germany's earliest gay bars, gives the modern Pride event a documented historical foundation predating the CSD movement itself
