Erlangen Poets Festival in Erlangen
Erlangen's Poetenfest was founded in 1980 by Karl Manfred Fischer with just eleven participating writers and has grown to around a hundred authors in a typical edition, held over four days each late August in the city's Schlossgarten palace garden since 1993. Renamed the Erlanger Poet*innenfest in 2022, the festival draws around 10,000 visitors and is timed deliberately just before the Frankfurt Book Fair, giving authors and publishers a public-facing gathering ahead of the industry's largest trade event.
Karl Manfred Fischer, head of Erlangen's cultural office, conceived and launched the Poetenfest in 1980 with a modest inaugural programme of just eleven participating writers, a scale that has since grown roughly tenfold to around a hundred authors taking part in a typical recent edition.
