Frankfurt Museumsuferfest in Frankfurt
Frankfurt's Museumsuferfest grew out of the city's 1978-launched project to concentrate museums along both banks of the river Main and now ranks among Europe's largest cultural festivals, held the last weekend of August. Live music, DJs and international food and craft stalls line both riverbanks alongside special museum access, drawing an estimated three million visitors.
Frankfurt's Museumsufer, or Museum Embankment, took shape as a deliberate cultural project from 1978 onward, when the city's culture department under Deputy Mayor Hilmar Hoffmann began concentrating a cluster of museums, many housed in historic villas, along both banks of the river Main, with the bulk of that expansion completed through the 1980s.
