Filmfest Hamburg

Filmfest Hamburg formed in 1992 from the merger of two predecessor initiatives, including the European Low Budget Film Forum, which had showcased then-unknown directors such as Lars von Trier and Stephen Frears from 1986 onward. Held each autumn across Hamburg's cinemas, the festival has grown to attract international stars while maintaining a documented commitment to young and independent filmmaking rooted in its low-budget origins.

Hamburg's route to a unified city film festival ran through two separate predecessor events: from 1986, the Hamburger Filmbureau organised the European Low Budget Film Forum, a showcase that hosted then-unknown directors including Derek Jarman, Stephen Frears and Lars von Trier well before their international breakthroughs, while a separate strand of city cinema days ran alongside it.
