Hamburg DOM in Hamburg
The Hamburger DOM is a large funfair held three times a year — spring, summer and winter — on the Heiligengeistfeld in St Pauli, tracing its name to a medieval market once held inside Hamburg's now-demolished cathedral. Each edition runs about thirty days with rides, food stalls and games, and Wednesday evenings bring a fireworks display over the grounds.
A market held inside Hamburg's old Mariendom cathedral gave this fair its name centuries before the building itself disappeared: merchants and entertainers used the cathedral as winter shelter as early as the eleventh century, with a market recorded there by 1329.
