Hamburg Port Anniversary in Hamburg

Hamburg's Hafengeburtstag, or Port Anniversary, commemorates a 1189 charter exempting Hamburg's merchant ships from customs duties, though the modern public festival dates to 1977. Held the first weekend of May along the harbour from the Speicherstadt to the Fischmarkt, it features a ship parade, fireworks and the signature tugboat ballet, drawing over a million visitors in its 830th-anniversary year.

Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted Hamburg's merchants a charter on 7 May 1189 exempting their ships from customs duties along the Elbe between the city and the North Sea, a privilege credited with helping the port grow into one of Europe's largest, and it is this charter date that the modern Hafengeburtstag, or Port Anniversary, commemorates each year.
