Documenta Kassel in Kassel

Documenta was founded in 1955 by artist Arnold Bode in Kassel as a deliberate reintroduction of modern art banned under Nazi rule, drawing 130,000 visitors to its first hundred-day edition. Now held every five years rather than annually, the exhibition uses the Fridericianum as its fixed anchor venue while expanding its footprint and global scope with each new edition, earning its nickname as the museum of one hundred days.

Artist and curator Arnold Bode founded documenta in 1955 as part of that year's Bundesgartenschau, the federal horticultural show then taking place in Kassel, with an explicit aim of reintroducing Germany to the modern art that Nazi cultural policy had banned and persecuted for two decades.
