Bachfest Leipzig in Leipzig

Bachfest Leipzig is a June festival built around the churches where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as Thomaskantor for twenty-seven years, principally the Thomaskirche, where he is buried, and the nearby Nikolaikirche. Performers and audiences travel from more than fifty countries for a programme centred on Bach's music, often featuring the Thomanerchor boys' choir, a musical institution founded in 1212 and still active today.

Johann Sebastian Bach arrived in Leipzig in May 1723 to take up the post of Thomaskantor, director of music at the Thomaskirche and its associated choir school, a position he held for twenty-seven years while composing an extraordinary volume of work, including some 150 cantatas, the St John and St Matthew Passions and the Christmas Oratorio.
