DOK Leipzig in Leipzig

DOK Leipzig was founded in 1955 as the Leipziger Kultur- und Dokumentarfilmwoche, the first independent film festival in East Germany and now widely regarded as the oldest documentary film festival in the world. Since introducing a dedicated animated-film competition in 1995, it has built a distinctive dual focus on documentary and animation, held each autumn across Leipzig venues after surviving severe financial difficulties in the years following German reunification.

West German journalist and film critic Ludwig Thomes proposed the idea to East German filmmakers that became DOK Leipzig, founded in 1955 under the name Leipziger Kultur- und Dokumentarfilmwoche, conceived partly as a counterpart to the established Mannheim documentary festival and partly as a platform specifically for East German productions, making it the first independent film festival to operate in East Germany.
