The story

Munich Film Festival in Munich

Filmfest Munchen launched in 1983 after a founding effort begun in 1979, and has grown into Germany's largest summer film festival, ranking second only to the Berlinale in scale and importance. Held annually in late June or early July, it screens around 150 films as world, international, European or German premieres across Munich's cinema venues over roughly ten days.

Plans for a major Munich film festival took shape in 1979 with the founding of Internationale Munchner Filmwochen GmbH, but political disagreements over how the event should be structured delayed an actual first edition for several years, until Filmfest Munchen finally launched in 1983 under founding director Eberhard Hauff with a programme deliberately built to be both nationally and internationally significant from the start.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ranking as Germany's largest summer film festival, second in scale and importance only to the Berlinale, is a specific and verifiable position among the country's film-festival calendar

02

The mystery stays covered

Its late-June or early-July summer timing, distinct from the Berlinale's winter dates, positions it as a genuine warm-weather alternative entry point into major German premieres rather than competing head-to-head for the same festival window

03

The city starts moving

Screening around 150 films as premieres across roughly ten days gives it a programme density comparable to considerably older, more internationally established festivals
