Wurzburg's Kiliani-Volksfest traces to a Kilianimesse charter granted by Emperor Konrad II in 1030, commemorating Saint Kilian, patron of the Wurzburg diocese, making it older than Munich's Oktoberfest. Timed around Kilian's 8 July feast day within the Kilianioktav observance, the fair split into separate sales and show events in 1846, with the show-fair side becoming today's Kiliani-Volksfest, now the largest Volksfest in Lower Franconia.

Emperor Konrad II granted permission for the Kilianimesse to Bishop Meinhard, Count of Rothenburg, on 13 October 1030, establishing an annual fair commemorating Saint Kilian, an Irish missionary bishop venerated as the Apostle of Franconia for his seventh-century missionary work across the region before his martyrdom, and now honoured as patron saint of the Wurzburg diocese.
