Detty December did not start as an official Ghanaian government initiative; it grew out of the informal slang term detty, a playful stretching of dirty used across West African youth culture to mean unrestrained partying, and it attached itself to Ghana's December calendar following the 2019 Year of Return campaign that invited the African diaspora to mark four centuries since the start of the transatlantic slave trade by visiting Ghana.
