Bugum Chugu Fire Festival in Tamale

Bugum Chugu, the Fire Festival, opens the Dagomba ceremonial year on the ninth day of Bugum Goli and is shared by Gonja, Mamprusi and Nanumba communities across northern Ghana. It reenacts the torch-lit search for a lost grandson of Naa Zoligu, with celebrants dressed as warriors carrying torches, cudgels and cutlasses while performing ziem, a dance tied to the tindaamba earth priests.

Bugum Chugu, known in Dagbani as Bugim Chugu and translated as the Fire Festival, opens the ceremonial year for the Dagomba people and is also observed by neighboring Gonja, Mamprusi and Nanumba communities across northern Ghana.
