Akonnedi Festival in Larteh
Larteh's annual Yam Festival doubles as the Akonnedi Shrine's own birthday celebration, one of Ghana's most prominent traditional religious sites. A week-long observance peaks on a Tuesday with possession rites for the shrine's senior deity, alongside the more familiar drumming, dancing and chief's durbar of a harvest festival.
Larteh, a Guan town within the wider Akuapem traditional area, is home to the Akonnedi Shrine, one of Ghana's most prominent traditional religious sites and the center of a festival that doubles as both the town's annual Yam Festival and the shrine's own birthday celebration for its principal deity.
