Damba, traced to Hausa and Wangara clerics active under the fourteenth Yaa Naa and formalized into Dagbon court life by the eighteenth Yaa Naa, Naa Zanjina, unfolds across a structured lunar-month calendar culminating in the bielkulsi climax. Chiefs across Yendi's durbar grounds appear on horseback with drumming and musket-display retinues, drawing participation from across Ghana's northern regions.
Damba traces its roots to Hausa and Wangara Muslim clerics who observed it during the reign of Naa Titugri, the fourteenth Yaa Naa of Dagbon, when it remained a relatively isolated Muslim observance rather than a kingdom-wide event.
