The story

Athens Epidaurus Festival in Athens/Epidaurus

Athens Epidaurus Festival has run since 1955, splitting a summer programme across two venues, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens for music, dance and contemporary theatre, and the fourth-century-BC Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus for classical tragedy and comedy performed largely without microphones, relying on the theatre's original acoustic design.

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus hosted its first modern production in 1938, a Sophocles' Electra staged without electric lighting, working only with the fading natural light of the afternoon since the site had no power supply at the time.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Epidaurus performances rely on the ancient theatre's own acoustics rather than amplification, carrying an unmiked voice clearly to roughly fourteen thousand stone seats, a technical feat that draws audiences as much as any individual production

02

The mystery stays covered

Combined with a history that traces to a 1938 Sophocles staging performed by natural light alone before electricity reached the site, and a formal 1955 founding built around National Theatre exclusivity for its first two decades, the festival offers one of the few remaining places to see classical Greek drama staged on a genuinely ancient, still-functioning performance structure rather than a reconstruction
