Athens International Film Festival in Athens
Founded in 1995 by the Athens Film Society, this festival opens each new Athens movie season with an International Competition for the Golden Athena, a Greek short film competition, an After Hours strand of genre and horror cinema, and director retrospectives, drawing an audience of roughly sixty thousand.
Launched in September 1995 by the non-profit Athens Film Society, this festival built its identity from the start around highlighting lesser-known genres and aspects of independent cinema, positioning itself as the event that opens each new movie season for Athens's film-going public rather than closing out the summer festival calendar like several of the city's other film events.
