Carnival in Athens spans about three weeks of Apokries season, from the grilled-meat feasting of Tsiknopempti through a grand parade from Syntagma to Kotzia Square, costumed daytime celebrations in Keramikos and confetti-filled nights in Plaka, ending with the Clean Monday kite-flying gathering on Filopappos Hill. The Municipality of Athens organizes dozens of free public events across the season.

Athens marks the last days before Lent with a grilled-meat holiday named for its smoke: Tsiknopempti, or Smoky Thursday, when barbecue smoke fills the city eleven days before Clean Monday and the Apokries carnival season reaches its midpoint.
