Corfu Easter in Corfu
Corfu's Holy Saturday custom of throwing large clay water jugs from balconies onto the streets of the old town, timed to the ringing of every church bell at eleven in the morning, believed to trace back to a Venetian New Year pottery-smashing custom later adopted into the Orthodox Easter calendar.
At eleven o'clock on Holy Saturday morning, every church bell in Corfu's old town rings out at once, and residents on the upper floors of the town's tall buildings throw large clay water jugs down onto the streets below.
