Miaoulia Festival Hydra in Hydra
Miaoulia Festival on Hydra honours Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, whose fireship tactics helped destroy the Ottoman flagship during the Greek War of Independence. What began as a single day has grown into nearly two weeks of June programming, artistic events, exhibitions, folk dances and games, culminating on June 27 with a full reenactment of the ship burning in Hydra's harbour and a closing wreath-laying church service.
Hydra burns a replica warship in its own harbour once a year, reenacting a fireship attack that Admiral Andreas Miaoulis's forces used to destroy the Ottoman flagship during the Battle of Gerontas in the Greek War of Independence.
