The story

Philippi Festival in Kavala/Philippi

Greece's second-oldest continuously running arts festival, founded in 1961 following a landmark 1957 revival performance, staged each summer inside the ancient theatre of Philippi, built in the mid-fourth century BC under Philip II of Macedon and one of the earliest stone theatre structures in Greece, near modern Kavala.

Founded in 360 BC by colonists from Thasos as Krinides, the city later renamed Philippi after Philip II of Macedon conquered it in 356 BC and completed its fortifications, and the theatre built in the mid-fourth century BC there is considered one of the earliest stone theatre structures anywhere in Greece.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

As the second-oldest continuously running festival in Greece, behind only Epidaurus, this event carries an institutional longevity matched by very few Greek cultural festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue, one of the earliest stone theatre structures anywhere in Greece, staged its first modern-era performance in 1957 after roughly twenty-four centuries of disuse, a documented gap of unusual length even among revived ancient theatres

03

The city starts moving

The surrounding UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site also layers early Christian history connected to the Apostle Paul onto the same ground, giving the festival setting a breadth of historical identity beyond its theatrical origins alone
