Armata Festival Spetses in Spetses

Armata Festival on Spetses commemorates the Naval Battle of Spetses, fought on September 8, 1822, when Captain Kosmas Barbatsis destroyed the Turkish flagship with his own fireship. Every September since 1931, the Municipality of Spetses has staged a week of cultural events culminating in a replica ship burning and choreographed fireworks display in the same strait where the original battle took place.

Captain Kosmas Barbatsis set fire to his own vessel and drove it into the Turkish flagship in the strait between Spetses and Kosta on September 8, 1822, one of the decisive naval actions of the Greek War of Independence, and islanders have re-enacted his fireship attack every year since 1931.
