Xanthi Carnival in Xanthi

Xanthi Carnival, formally founded in 1966 to revive the folklore of wider Thrace, is the largest carnival in northern Greece and the second largest nationally after Patras. Its programme reflects the region's genuinely multicultural history, with Pomak and Turkish community groups performing folk dances and sharing dishes like manti alongside Greek Orthodox carnival groups, plus older customs such as the burning of the Tzaros effigy.

Xanthi Carnival was formally established in 1966 by residents who wanted a carnival built specifically around reviving the folklore of wider Thrace, rather than simply staging a costume parade.
