J'ouvert Grenada in St. George's
Grenada's pre-dawn Carnival Monday tradition sends masqueraders through St George's covered in mud, paint, oil or powder, moving with sound trucks and drums ahead of the more polished, costumed Parade of the Bands the following day. Rooted in Francophone Caribbean jour ouvert traditions, J'ouvert strips carnival back to something rawer and more participatory than the daytime parade's designed costumes.
J'ouvert opens Grenada's Carnival Monday before sunrise, when masqueraders fill the streets of St George's covered in mud, paint, oil or powder, moving through the city in a procession that predates and historically inspired the more polished, costumed Parade of the Bands held the following afternoon.
