The Fiesta del Cristo Negro centers on a blackened wooden crucifix housed in the Basilica of Esquipulas in Chiquimula, and draws the largest annual pilgrim gathering in Central America each January 15. Devotees arrive from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and further afield, many walking the last stretch on their knees. Sawdust carpets, an all-night novena, and a basilica procession anchor the week's schedule.
