Festival Icaro de Cine Centroamericano in Guatemala City
Founded in Guatemala in 1998 and expanded into a Central American festival by 2000, Festival Icaro screens regional film across venues in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala, with parallel editions traveling through neighboring countries. Organized by Casa Comal, it emphasizes Central American production, human rights and environmental themes, functioning as the region's primary platform for film that otherwise struggles to find distribution.
Festival Icaro began in 1998 when a group of Guatemalan filmmakers organized the country's first dedicated cinema festival, backed by the ministries of culture and foreign affairs, national universities, and television broadcasters at a time when Guatemala had almost no infrastructure for exhibiting independent or national film.
