Semana Santa Guatemala in Guatemala
Guatemala City's own Holy Week processions, organised by historic parish hermandades from churches including La Recolección, Santo Domingo and La Merced, featuring massive wooden andas carried by thousands of purple-robed cucuruchos through Zone 1's historic centre in a more neighbourhood-focused, less tourist-oriented observance than Antigua's.
Twelve thousand or more purple-robed cucuruchos can carry a single procession's massive wooden anda through Guatemala City's Zone 1 on Good Friday, with floats so heavy that as many as one hundred twenty bearers rotate in shifts beneath them over the course of a route that can stretch for kilometres through the historic centre.
