Festival de Maximon Zunil in Zunil
Zunil, a K'iche' Maya town near Quetzaltenango, maintains its own San Simon effigy, distinct from Santiago Atitlan's Rilaj Mam in both appearance and custom: the Zunil figure wears sunglasses and a bandana and is moved nightly to a bedroom before returning to the altar each morning. Attendants at the house offer paid spiritual consultations rather than centering on a Holy Week procession.
Zunil, a K'iche' Maya town near Quetzaltenango known for its hot springs and vegetable farming, hosts its own distinct veneration of the figure known across Guatemala as Maximon, here often called San Simon.
