Built on Guernsey's historical literary associations with writers including Victor Hugo and Mervyn Peake, the Guernsey Literary Festival is a volunteer-run charity event spreading its program across island venues including the Old Government House Hotel, St Pierre Park Hotel, Les Cotils and the Guille-Alles Library. Guernsey's literary credentials predate its modern festival by well over a century, since the island's landscape and history drew serious literary attention from writers including Victor Hugo, who spent years of exile on Guernsey and wrote some of his most significant later work there, and Mervyn Peake, whose own connection to the island fed into his distinctive gothic imagination.
