The story

Carnival in Bissau in Bissau

Bissau's national carnival sends neighborhood blocos and regional delegations from eight provinces down the capital's main avenue over two or three days, judged on costume, drumming and choreography. Gumbe rhythm and masks ranging from carved village faces to new papier-mache figures define the procession, which draws its liveliest crowds toward evening each day.

Guinea-Bissau's carnival returned to organized form in 1984, when the General Directorate of Culture took over a celebration that state-run youth structures had revived after the 1974 independence.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The competition structure sets this carnival apart from a simple street party: eight regional delegations plus roughly seventeen Bissau neighborhood groups are scored across thirty-eight judged sectors, with a cash prize for the winning region, so towns hundreds of kilometers from the capital send costumed contingents specifically to compete

02

The mystery stays covered

Masked figures from the Bijagos Islands, including the horned Vaca Bruto associated with initiation rites, sometimes join the mainland procession alongside newer papier-mache creations, mixing sacred island iconography with invented parade characters in a single afternoon of judged performance
