Bubaque's carnival keeps the intimate scale of a village celebration: elected local queens process alongside dancers wearing Bijagos masks such as the horned Vaca Bruto, moving to steady tam-tam drumming through streets short enough to cover on foot in a single unhurried afternoon of walking.
