Bartica Easter Regatta in Bartica

Bartica's Easter Regatta began with a 1947 speedboat race between a visiting yachtsman and a local challenger and has grown into Guyana's oldest regatta, filling the Essequibo River town for weeks around Easter. Powerboat and jet-ski races headline a final weekend that also includes bush-boat races, athletics, a beauty pageant, gospel concerts and street parties, drawing miners, boat operators and their families back to the interior for the holiday.

In 1947, a trans-Atlantic yacht that had navigated forty miles up the Essequibo River to Bartica sparked a speedboat challenge between its owner and a local electrical-works manager, and the impromptu race between the two boats drew out nearly the whole riverside town.
