Deepavali Guyana

Deepavali is a national public holiday in Guyana, reflecting the country's large Indo-Guyanese Hindu population descended from indentured labourers who began arriving in 1838. Georgetown's Diwali Motorcade, organised by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha since 1974, is the best-known public event, an evening procession of illuminated floats depicting Hindu deities that runs from the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville to the LBI Community Centre Ground on the East Coast.

Guyana is one of a small number of countries outside the Indian subcontinent to make Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights, a national public holiday, a status tied to the country's large Indo-Guyanese population descended from indentured labourers brought over from 1838 onward.
