Easter Monday in Guyana is given over to kite flying, a custom traced to nineteenth-century Chinese indentured labourers who flew kites to mark the return of spring near the same time as the Christian holiday. Families gather with homemade or bought kites at open spaces such as Georgetown's seawall and Botanical Gardens, alongside similar scenes in towns and villages along the coast, making it one of the country's few genuinely nationwide shared observances.
Guyana is often cited as the only country where Easter Monday is marked nationwide by kite flying rather than by any single church service or parade.
