The story

Georgetown Deepavali Motorcade in Georgetown

A procession of nearly forty illuminated floats moves from the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville through central Georgetown to the LBI Community Centre Ground on Diwali night. Organized by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha for more than fifty years, it draws entries from temples, schools and businesses across Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice, plus large roadside crowds of every background.

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has organized this parade of illuminated floats through Georgetown for more than five decades, making it one of the longest-running public processions in the country.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The motorcade's route is fixed and well known: Campbellville to Sandy Babb Street, onto Vlissengen Road, past the Kitty seawall, ending at LBI

02

The mystery stays covered

That combination of a decades-old organizing body, a nearly forty-float lineup and a set city route distinguishes it from the smaller, neighborhood-level Diwali motorcades run independently by individual mandirs elsewhere in Guyana

03

The city starts moving

Floats are built around scenes from Hindu epics and mythology alongside contemporary national themes, wired with strings of lights rather than static decoration, and often carry live drummers or recorded devotional and chutney music

04

The water draws everyone in

The closing program at LBI usually includes remarks from Sabha officials and government representatives
