Mashramani Republic Day in Georgetown

Guyana marks 23 February 1970, the day it became a Co-operative Republic, with Mashramani, a national holiday built around a costume and float parade through Georgetown. The Amerindian-derived name means celebration after hard work. Weeks of soca, calypso, and steelpan competitions lead up to the parade, which ends with judging at the National Park.

Guyana became a Co-operative Republic on 23 February 1970, four years after gaining independence from Britain, formally removing the monarch as head of state, and Mashramani is the annual celebration built around that date.
